BRAVE

Rise Stronger After Life's Hardest Moments

About the Book

Publishing October 13th, 2026 | Paperback and Hardcover | 372 pages

After answering the call to emergency service throughout a thirty-year career in wildland and structural firefighting, Rob Z Christensen introduces his framework for performing the feat of self-rescue after life’s hardest moments. In his debut solo work, Rob retraces and shares his own steps to unpack years of intergenerational and occupational trauma through acknowledgment, intentional practice, and self-acceptance.

Part gut-punching autobiography, part road map to recovery, BRAVE: Rise Stronger After Life’s Hardest Moments offers a model for resilience that is aligned with neuroscience—but built from lived experience. Rob charts a course that was proven on the fireground but developed for anyone who’s been held hostage by fear and hurt they couldn’t name. In his forged-in-the-trenches guide to personal transformation, he brings a distinctive, relatable voice that’s at once boldly genuine, deeply compassionate, and honest without shame.

Rob was twenty-eight years old and six years into a promising firefighting career, standing by while his captain performed CPR on an elderly man, when his own body checked out on him. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t speak. The paralysis was familiar—it had first pinned him to a shag carpet when he was only ten years old.

Back at the firehouse after he froze on duty, his captain spoke the words that would change Rob’s life—and the lives of countless others he would grow to serve as a mental health advocate: “That call last week. You need to go talk to somebody.”

What followed became a decades-long study in how to bounce forward from hardship—work that would put pivotal stages of Rob’s journey on the big screen—and in The New York Times—in ways he never expected. After hundreds of shifts spent pulling strangers out of burning buildings and irrigation canals, Rob’s hardest rescue turned out to be his own.

Now, he offers you the BRAVE framework, his five-point approach to rising beyond adversity into a stronger and more authentic self.

BRAVE includes:

  1. an introduction to trauma and its aftermath—in no-nonsense, real-world terms
  1. five tested virtues to grow forward: Bravery. Resilience. Authenticity. Vulnerability. Empathy.
  1. science-backed tools to loosen trauma’s grip, practiced by a firefighter who learned how to reset his nervous system in a room alongside Special Forces and SWAT team members
  1. case studies from real-life trauma survivors who found hope beyond the hurt—offering proof that growth is a choice you get to make

Praise for BRAVE

“While Rob’s story unfolds in the firehouse, the wisdom in these pages speaks to anyone who has faced something that broke them—whether that’s loss, betrayal, illness, addiction, divorce, or the quiet accumulation of life's wounds. Anyone searching for a practical path through pain to growth will find it here. The BRAVE framework can be trusted because it comes from direct experience—from someone who took his own healing seriously and now dedicates his life to helping others do the same.”

—Michael Sapiro, PsyD | Author of Truth Medicine: Healing and Living Authentically Through Psychedelic Psychotherapy

“Anyone carrying the weight of unprocessed trauma will find themselves in these pages. BRAVE makes the hidden costs of what we’ve buried impossible to ignore—and provides a framework to start recovery.”

—Rob Hilvers, MD | Leading First Responder Healthcare Expert

“Rob is the bravest person I know, not because of his willingness to run into burning buildings, but because of his courage in sharing his own vulnerabilities with the world.”

—Director Brandon Kapelow | An Act of Service (2024); Under Fire (2026)
